Inclusive teaching, learning, and assessment practice

At its core, inclusive practice is about creating learning environments that respect and celebrate diversity, while actively removing barriers to participation and achievement in learning. There are many resources that provide more information, guiding principles, and practical advice for inclusivity in practice. The following resources provide a starting point for embedding inclusivity in practice at EAIT:

Preferred Names Tool

As an outcome of the UQ Preferred Names initiative, students may choose to use a different name than their legal name. If they have chosen a preferred name, it is important that we respect this and use these within our classes.

This is being rolled out across all UQ systems, with students able to change their name in some UQ systems so far. Preferred names can be added in SI-net (and will appear on student ID cards), but Blackboard and associated learning tools still show legal names. This can be problematic for students when completing group assessment tasks or in-person assessment.

Where preferred names are shown:

  • SI-net class lists
  • Allocate+ activity lists (preferred name is shown in the First Name column)
  • Microsoft Teams
  • EECS Queue platform (updated in August 2025)
  • Blackboard (updating in February 2026)

Where preferred names may not be shown:

  • Inspera, when not accessed via Blackboard.
  • ePortfolio
  • iThenticate
  • Ed Discussion
  • Echo360, when not accessed via Blackboard.

For situations where teaching staff are calling out names in a class (e.g. oral presentations or during tutorials), it is strongly recommended that staff refer to a class list that displays preferred names.
