The Women in Computing program (WiC) encourages young women to pursue technology education and careers while providing a skilled and diverse pipeline for the technology sector.

Technology is the largest growth industry in Australia and offers a large range of career opportunities, in a global market with some of the highest paying jobs available in the market.

WiC leverages from the nation-leading success of UQ Women in Engineering program to inspire young women to consider a career in technology. Through hands-on activities and workshops, interactive presentations, digital resources, and fun events, WiC aims to educate female high school students, teachers and parents about technology and provide support and industry connections for current students at UQ.

Program goals

Increase gender diversity in UQ’s computing programs
Support and nurture current university students studying computing
Generate a pipeline of talent for industry, creating a diverse and inclusive workforce
Build long-lasting relationships with high schools and industry

A critical need

The demand for Computer Science and Information Technology experts in Australia and around the world is reaching new heights, yet the number of graduates nationally will not currently meet industry demand. This is particularly difficult to address when women make up 50 percent of the Australian population yet only 20 percent of Computer Science professionals, and just 28 percent of IT professionals.

Technologies that are designed to reach, inspire, and enhance the lives of all of society are not being designed by a workforce that reflects the society in which it serves. Computing and related fields are unlocking human potential, pushing the boundaries of imagination, and harnessing technology to solve endemic global challenges. Our future should be shaped by leaders that reflect the population they serve. This requires not only more computer science and IT professionals but a more diverse, dynamic profession.

A comprehensive, sustained outreach effort in high schools would inspire young women to become technical experts who are equipped to deliver solutions that meet the unique needs of different genders, cultures, and backgrounds. A diverse future demands diverse leaders.
