I hope to support younger females who feel daunted by being in a male-dominated field as I have been there, and the support I received made me feel like persevering throughout my degree.

Hi, I'm Bailey!

I'm in my Fourth Year of a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) / Master of Engineering specialising in Software Engineering with a minor in Data Science. I caught up with the Women in Engineering team to chat all things engineering and offer my advice to new engineering students.

What or who inspired you to choose engineering?

My Dad was a self-taught software engineer and I thought it was so amazing he could learn all these things all by himself! I wanted the opportunity to continue learning what I wanted after I graduated.

Why did you choose the discipline you are studying?

I chose software engineering as I had started programming in high school and loved the problem-solving and logic that comes with it. I found it was so different to anything else taught in school.

What is one thing about university or engineering that you wished you knew earlier?

Time management and effective study habits are crucial. Balancing courses, work, and personal life can be challenging, so learning to manage time efficiently is a valuable skill.

What made you pick engineering at the University of Queensland over other universities?

I was told it was great for the opportunities that are offered exclusively at the University of Queensland. When I did my work placement most students were from UQ, students can be teaching assistants and there is a fantastic social life offered that students get involved with (Engineering Undergraduate Society).

Give us your best tip for first-year engineering students?

Stay organised, manage your time well, and don't be afraid to seek help when needed! The course coordinators and tutors are there to help you. Building a strong foundation early on will set the tone for the rest of your academic journey.

Tell us your favourite example of amazing engineering?

I think ChatGPT has amazed me and how well it can answer questions and teach me content I don’t understand. The fact it is opensource and is free to access for a basic version is also really great!

What's your dream engineering job when you graduate?

I would love to be in the academic field researching Quantum Computing!

What do you hope to achieve as a WE student leader?

I hope to help foster a strong community at UQ and enlighten students about what engineering is like (because I would’ve never imagined how great it was especially in school)!
