Leigh Amores

Engineering is so tough! But equally as rewarding if you put the work in.

Hi, I'm Leigh!

I'm in my Second Year of a Bachelor of Engineering, specialising in Biomedical. I caught up with the Women in Engineering team to chat all things engineering and offer my advice to new engineering students.

What or who inspired you to choose engineering?

I’ve always loved STEM since high school! Since my mum was a chem, bio and physics teacher in high school, these were always my favourite subjects. It was only natural that I would study STEM in university.

Why did you choose the discipline you are studying?

It is my dream to integrate engineering and innovative healthcare solutions. I aspire to one day design ground-breaking medical devices to revolutionise healthcare! I have always loved physics and was interested in learning about the application of science and engineering in everyday life. I thought electrical engineering opened the door to various industries, such as telecom, energy, biomedical engineering, computer engineering, mining etc!

What is one thing about university or engineering that you wished you knew earlier?

Engineering is so tough! But equally as rewarding if you put the work in.

What made you pick engineering at the University of Queensland over other universities?

I’ve always been in love with the beautiful sandstone UQ campus! Additionally, I had also heard a lot of great things about the fun and welcoming student culture (all which were very true!).

Give us your best tip for first-year engineering students?

Study but have a lot of fun, especially during the ENGG1100 team project!

Tell us your favourite example of amazing engineering?

Recently I have been very impressed with the use of AI and VR headsets / glasses. I think it’s ground-breaking technology that could soon become a part of everyday life.

What's your dream engineering job when you graduate?

Biomedical engineering is an incredible industry that has the potential to grow so much in Australia. Hence, I would love to be on the forefront of such innovation. Otherwise, I am also equally interested in telecommunications!

What do you hope to achieve as a WE student leader?

I hope to inspire young girls to not be afraid of challenges, and to follow their passions.
