I hope to provide support to our newest engineering students – I remember how tough first-year was and would like to ease that stress, even just a little bit!

Hi, I'm Rose!

I'm in my Fourth Year of a Bachelor of Engineering, specialising in Electrical. I caught up with the Women in Engineering team to chat all things engineering and offer my advice to new engineering students.

What or who inspired you to choose engineering?

In high school I was very torn between pursuing STEM or humanities in university; I enjoyed aspects of both. In the end, I decided to give engineering a go – it would be a good open-door for any path I wanted to go down. Lucky for me I have loved it ever since!

Why did you choose the discipline you are studying?

I initially chose electrical engineering as I wanted to work in the industry of developing audio/performance equipment – I thought that electrical engineering suited my interests perfectly. Since then my interests have broadened, but it is still something I would like to pursue after graduation.

What is one thing about university or engineering that you wished you knew earlier?

Scholarships! There are so many for first-year students that I had no idea about.

What made you pick engineering at the University of Queensland over other universities?

I thought that the University of Queensland gave a deeper understanding of engineering theories and principles. While there are some great programmes at other universities, UQ offered a more well-rounded approach to engineering.

Give us your best tip for first-year engineering students?

Go to all your classes! Your new university freedom will tempt you to skip classes and catch up later – but I promise you’ll get to the end of semester with 50 hours of lectures to watch and an exam in 3 days. Going to all your lectures and tutorials is the #1 best way to stay on top of your content.

Tell us your favourite example of amazing engineering?

The Empire State Building! It boggles my mind that it was built in 1931!

What’s your dream engineering job when you graduate?

Working on/designing music technology and equipment.

What do you hope to achieve as a WE student leader?

I hope to provide support to our newest engineering students – I remember how tough first-year was and would like to ease that stress, even just a little bit!
