Hi, I'm Parnia!

I'm in my Second Year of a Bachelor of Engineering / Master of Engineering, majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace. I caught up with the Women in Engineering team to chat all things engineering and offer my advice to new engineering students.

What or who inspired you to choose engineering?

My uncle, and also watching tons of Jimmy Neutron movies.

Why did you choose the discipline you are studying?

I was always very passionate about astronomy and stars, also how the sky that we see every night might actually be from millions of years ago, but I wanted to apply practical skills rather than just researching and discovering. That’s why I chose aerospace.

What is one thing about university or engineering that you wished you knew earlier?

I wish I knew that in comparison to other programs at UQ, exams are more important than assignments in engineering courses. So, I would study the course from the beginning and would solve a lot more examples rather than put extra work on assignments to make them perfect.

I would also join more clubs!

What made you pick engineering at the University of Queensland over other universities?

Diversity, ranking, real-world experience and quality of programs

Give us your best tip for first-year engineering students?

Find lots of friends, study for exams, don’t be afraid of ENGG1100 and explore all your options for different types of engineering that you can do to find what you really love and are passionate about

Tell us your favourite example of amazing engineering?

For something that is truly accessible for all, the record player mechanism! Something that I wish to see: international space station. And something else that amazes me, the under two-second wheel replacement for F1 cars!

What’s your dream engineering job when you graduate?

Working as an aerospace engineer at NASA, a girl can always dream!

What do you hope to achieve as a WE student leader?

Connecting with students, help them realize how amazing engineering is and make them believe in themselves!
