Overview

This research investigates how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including startups, can strategically leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to expand their capabilities, unlock new sources of value, and drive sustainable growth. It examines how AI-enabled tools can enhance operational efficiency, market responsiveness, and innovation capacity in rapidly changing environments. By developing actionable frameworks, policy recommendations, and capability-building programs, the research aims to support SMEs in moving beyond experimentation to embed AI within their core processes, business models, and market offerings. The program connects SMEs with university expertise and cross-sector partners in areas such as biotechnology, health, and mining. These collaborations demonstrate how innovation ecosystems can accelerate AI adoption and position SMEs as key contributors to Australia’s transition towards a resilient, knowledge-driven economy.
