Hi, I'm Emily!
I'm in my Second Year of a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical and Environmental). I caught up with the Women in Engineering team to chat all things engineering and offer my advice to new engineering students.
What or who inspired you to choose engineering?
I’ve always had a passion for problem solving, especially those related to the environment. Growing up, I was heavily involved in sustainability initiatives, and I wanted to turn that passion into a career. Engineering, stood out to me because it blends technical problem-solving with making a tangible impact on the planet.
Why did you choose the discipline you are studying?
I chose Environmental Engineering because as it’s a combination of my love for maths and science and my desire to contribute to a more sustainable world.
What is one thing about university or engineering that you wished you knew earlier?
Collaboration and communication are key in engineering. Creating a community of people around is essential to not only academic but personal success at university.
What made you pick engineering at the University of Queensland over other universities?
I was drawn to UQ’s resources and the campus community. The campus is beautiful and adds another dimension to university life.
Give us your best tip for first-year engineering students?
My best tip is to stay organised and manage your time well, so using tools like a calendar to stay on top of deadlines and prioritising tasks will help you maintain a balance and stay on track.
Tell us your favourite example of amazing engineering?
One of my favourite examples of amazing engineering is the Hornsdale Power Reserve in South Australia. It's home to the world’s largest lithium-ion battery, which stores excess renewable energy and helps stabilize the grid.
What's your dream engineering job when you graduate?
I’d love to be in a role that creates innovative solutions to aids industries to become more sustainable while maintaining productivity.
What do you hope to achieve as a WE student leader?
As a WE student leader, I want to inspire and support other women in engineering by creating a welcoming and encouraging space where everyone feels supported.
