Advait - Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering
Advait completed a 3-month stay at The University of Osaka in the Fluid Mechanics Group, focusing on predictive modelling of liquid-gas phase interface deformation in two-phase flows.
Overall, this experience has developed my personal growth [and] made me more confident, resourceful, and open to stepping outside my comfort zone.
Motivations
What motivated you to apply for the program and complete your BE/ME placement in Japan?
This program motivated me because it provided the opportunity to develop both technically and personally outside my comfort zone. As an engineering student, I was drawn to this program as it offers exposure to global research environments and encourages different ways of thinking. I chose The University of Osaka due to its strong reputation in engineering, as well as the opportunity to experience a unique culture. Being closely immersed in a leading research environment, mainly computational fluid dynamics, has deepened my appreciation for the complexity and attention to detail to model even seemingly simple physics. Post graduation, I aim to pursue a career that aims to solve complex engineering problems whether in research or industry. This opportunity has broadened my perspective and highlighted the importance of challenging myself.
Personal Development
How have you developed as a person throughout this experience?
This experience has helped me develop my key personal skills, mainly independence, communication, and adaptability. Living away form home for an extended period in a country where English is not the primary language required me to become more self-reliant and proactive in navigating daily life. This included managing routine tasks such as grocery shopping, using public transport, and ordering at restaurants. Immersing myself in this environment strengthened my ability to communicate effectively and think on my feet, especially in situations where I was initially uncertain. I learned to approach challenges with a problem-solving mindset, which significantly improved my adaptability. Overall, this experience has developed my personal growth by giving me a new perspective on how I approach daily tasks, interact with others, and integrate into new environments. It has made me more confident, resourceful, and open to stepping outside my comfort zone.
Academic Development
How have you developed academically, and what opportunities did you have that helped you realise this development?
A significant part of my research experience at The University of Osaka involved conducting literature reviews to build a strong foundational understanding of my project. This was an area I had not previously explored in depth. It required me to process and retain large amounts of technical information, while also being able to clearly explain key concepts to my supervisors. Initially, I found it challenging to identify and gather relevant sources. However, by actively seeking guidance from my supervisor and collaborating with peers in the laboratory, I developed a more structured and effective approach to sourcing literature. This experience greatly improved my ability to independently learn. Through this process, I developed a stronger attention to detail, as well as the ability to identify gaps in existing research. I also gained confidence in communicating technical information and proposing ideas for my work.
Professional Development
How about professional development? What opportunities did you have and exercise through this experience?
Weekly meetings with my supervisors provided valuable opportunities to both gather and communicate relevant information about my research in a professional and meaningful manner. As these were recurring, I was able to continuously develop my skills in speaking, active listening, information gathering, and problem-solving. While I believe similar opportunities may been offered elsewhere, the recurrence and how easily accessible these meetings were allowed me to progress at a much faster rate.
Costs and Funding
How much was your total budget for the program, and how did this compare to your actual costs?
I did not set a strict budget for the program; however, I found that my overall expenses were lower than expected. As I was staying in a dormitory, my living costs were significantly cheaper compared to back home, which gave me greater flexibility in managing other expenses such as food, travel, and activities. Overall, the cost of living in Osaka can be quite manageable for students, especially when accommodation is in the dormitory.
The [New Colombo Plan] grant provided was more than sufficient in funding my stay.
Accommodation
What accommodation options were there and how did you manage?
The process of applying to the dormitory was straightforward and I had a lot of assistance from all parties.
Highlights
What were your top three highlights of the experience?
Seeing immense snowfall in Osaka (very rare)
Hike in Kyoto – Mount Higashiyama
Graduation dinner with lab-mates and professors
Advice/tips for future applicants
I don’t think I would change my experience in any way. That said, for future participants, I would strongly encourage you to spend your weekends and evenings immersing yourself in the beautiful culture of Osaka. Try as many local cuisines and activities as possible and take the opportunity to speak with as many people as you can, as everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful. At the same time, be mindful of local customs by remaining polite and respectful of the culture.
