Demonstrators and Tutors
The Faculty is committed to providing an excellent experience for our students and considers the professional development of its teaching staff important for both its staff and students.
It is essential that staff are provided with the tools and skills to deliver the curriculum to ensure students receive a good learning experience.
All high-achieving second, third, and fourth year undergraduate students, postgraduate coursework, and higher degree by research (HDR) students are invited to apply to become demonstrators or tutors of undergraduate students. Degree-qualified applicants from relevant disciplines (who are not currently a University of Queensland student) are also encouraged to register their interest in becoming a tutor or demonstrator.
Casual demonstrators and tutors
While both deliver material to students, there is a difference in the way the roles of demonstrators and tutors are structured and paid.
Tutors are paid for 1 hour delivery and 2 hours of directly-associated work time (e.g. marking of work that has arisen from the tutorial session), while demonstrators are paid an hourly rate for all work undertaken. The hourly rate is the same for demonstrators and tutors. In most cases, EAIT hires casual demonstrators rather than tutors. Any work undertaken in addition to the contact time (e.g. preparation and marking) is paid at the same hourly rate.
Higher rates of pay are applicable for staff who have a PhD or who are coordinating the course or who are required to use autonomous academic judgement.
For ease, we will use the term ‘tutor’ on this website to refer collectively to tutors and casual demonstrators.
Applications
Individuals can apply to undertake casual teaching as a demonstrator or tutor for engineering, architecture and information technology courses listed on the EAIT Casual Academic Recruitment website.
Applications for Semester One, 2024 close at 4pm on Monday 15th January 2024.
It is expected that applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application by email on, or as soon as practicable after, Wednesday 31st January 2024.
Please note that any successful applicant who has not previously attended Demonstrator and Tutor Training is required to complete the online Demonstrator and Tutor Training and attend the Demonstrator and Tutor Training workshop on the Friday of O week [16th February 2024].
Attendance is compulsory for all first-time demonstrators/tutors so applicants must ensure they are available on this day.
Demonstrators and tutors who have not attended and completed all mandatory training are not permitted to commence teaching.

Student Evaluation of Tutor (SETutor)
The Student Evaluation of Tutor (SETutor) questionnaire supplements the Student Evaluation of Course and Teacher (SECaT) to evaluate student experience of casual teaching. The SETutor can be used by you to reflect upon the effectiveness of your teaching. This feedback can be used to maintain standards and improve performance. More information.
