EAIT Study Plans

What is a Study Plan?

A recommended study plan (different from the First Year Recommended Enrolment plans and guides) is a suggested sequence of courses designed to help you complete your program efficiently and meet all degree requirements. These plans show which courses to take each semester, including core courses, electives, and any specialisation options. They’re a great way to stay on track, balance your workload, and make sure you’re meeting prerequisites for future courses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I haven’t followed the recommended study plan exactly?
You are welcome to adjust your plan according to your own circumstances. The recommended study plan is only a general point of advice that is designed to work for all students.

Is there any plan specific for first year students?
The First Year Recommended Enrolment page contains First Year Recommended Enrolment Plans, Program Guides and Recommended Enrolment Guides provide additional information specifically intended for commencing EAIT students. These guides are the best support for first year students, with Study Plans providing a supplementary support resource for planning beyond first year. It is recommended to first consult your relevant First Year Recommended Enrolment Plans, Program Guides and Recommended Enrolment Guides during your first year, then utilise your relevant recommended study plan beyond first year.

What if I’m enrolled in an older version of my program?
If you are enrolled in an older version of a program, you should follow the course requirements and enrolment guides for the year you commenced. If certain courses are no longer offered, you should speak to an academic advisor on seeking a replacement course.

How do I know which version of the program rules applies to me?
Your program rules are determined by the year in which you commenced your program. If you started your program in 2023, you only need to follow the rules from the 2023 program.

What should I do if I need to change or check my study plan?
You can change or check your enrolment plan in mySI-net. Always speak to an academic advisor before switching your enrolment plans, as this may affect the units you can claim against completed courses.

Will changing my plan affect my graduation timeline?
It depends. Your graduation date is dependent on how quickly you complete the required courses in your program, and the indicated graduation dates are based on a standard full-time study load of 8 units per semester. If you overload your courses, or complete a summer semester, you may be able to graduate sooner. Likewise, if you underload your courses, or fail a course, you may graduate later.

Can I personalise my study plan to suit my interests or circumstances?
Yes and no. There are certain courses that are core/required courses which must be taken by everyone based on your specialisation and degree, but for any electives in your program you can pick courses that better suit your interests as long as it's within your program requirements.

Can I swap courses between semesters or take them out of order?
It is generally not a problem to change the order of your courses if you meet the necessary prerequisites for each course, which are listed on the course webpage. The recommended study plans have already accounted for these prerequisites, but if you wish to change the order of these courses, the onus is on you to ensure you meet the requirements before taking a course.

What if a course I need isn’t offered this semester?
If a course that you need to take is not offered, you should check if it is offered in a future semester, then speak to an academic advisor and take another course for the current semester.

How do I choose or change my major or minor?
Your major, minor, and/or specialisation are recorded in mySI-net, under Enrolments -> Plans and you can add or drop a plan as desired. To check whether you are eligible to change your academic plan, please refer to your program requirements. Additionally, your program may not allow plan change within a certain number of units of completion. Please contact your Faculty/School office for assistance with these circumstances. Engineering students have to choose in 2nd year to complete your program of study.

Can I overload or underload in a semester?
Generally yes, but always speak to an academic advisor before overloading or underloading in a semester as there may be certain requirements depending on if you have a study visa, your GPA and if you are a full time or part time student.

What happens if I fail a course listed in the recommended plan?
If you received a grade of 3 on a course, you may apply for supplementary assessment within 4 days of receiving your grade. A supplementary assessment is designed to give you a second chance at achieving a passing grade for a course. If you are not eligible for supplementary assessment, you will need to take that course again in a future semester, which may delay your expected graduation date.

What if I have credit or exemptions from previous study?
If you believe that you have credit or an exemption from previous study, and are unsure if they can be transferred to your new program, you should speak to an academic advisor on claiming these. You can apply for credit or exemptions up to 2 weeks before the start of semester, but we recommend applying sooner to ensure these are processed on time as there are no provisions for late applications.
