What do you love most about your degree?

I believe engineering is one of the purest forms of problem-solving and after trying out introductory mechanical, electrical and software subjects in my first year I knew I was in the right place. Although I was initially unsure of what specialisation to choose, I found that software appealed to me the most out of my first-year subjects.  I thoroughly enjoyed the idea of taking a concept and breaking it down into a matter of variables, loops, functions and classes that all need to contribute towards a sustainable and scalable end product. Whilst other disciplines are often constrained to real-world physics and chemistry, I’ve found software usually is not and with the near countless possibilities and applications, I knew this was an industry I wanted to be in.

The best piece of advice I could give someone considering studying at UQ is…

Take your time! A lot of people rush through university without taking notice or advantage of the opportunities that come with it – I certainly did this in my first year as I was somewhat overwhelmed with the opportunities and challenges that come with university life. After returning to campus post-covid I’ve taken many opportunities as they’ve arisen and have not looked back since – it’s part of the reason why I added a concurrent Diploma of Languages to my engineering degree. It opened the possibility of travel and exchange which was something I didn’t think I’d get a chance to do while at university.
