Who or what made you choose to study this?
Growing up in an environment where technology is very prominent, and being raised by two software engineers, has cultivated my passion for innovation through technology. I have always been interested in mathematics and programming as I revel in finding solutions to challenging problems in a creative and well-thought-out manner.
Tell us about some extracurricular activities you’ve been involved in.
Last year I was lucky enough to participate in a program with UQ Ventures that allowed me to go to Singapore for a four-week in-person learning experience. I was placed at an EdTech start-up where I worked as a software engineering intern. Here I was able to explore my passion for Artificial Intelligence and discover its capabilities for innovation within the EdTech space.
One of the exciting aspects of this internship was the opportunity to work with cutting-edge AI technologies. Before the recent release of the largely popular AI Chatbot ChatGPT, I was tasked within my internship to integrate the GPT-3 model, which is the autoregressive natural language processing model that Chat GPT was built on top of. At the start-up, I was able to contribute to the ecosystem of NLP APIs within the system by creating, testing, and dockerizing a paraphrasing and summarising API service. This was used for generating more training phrases for intent prediction and to improve the core features of the company's AI educational service. I even had the chance to provide consulting for the CEO and Engineering lead regarding upcoming projects.
