Who or what made you choose to study this?

Throughout high school, I was always interested in learning about how the world worked from different lenses and the varying branches of science allowed me to do this. I knew I wanted science to be incorporated into my degree at university and my future career path. I was specifically interested in medical science as my mum is a nurse working with cancer patients and I hear many stories about their lives and conditions. After attending a UQ Open Day for chemical engineering and learning about the majors they offered, I realised that chemical and biomedical engineering would allow me to design and develop drug therapies for diseases, including cancer, and open up many opportunities in varying branches of both chemical and biomedical engineering.

The best piece of advice I could give someone considering studying at UQ is…

UQ offers so many opportunities in varying aspects, be it travel, internships, societies and many more. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed. Start with your interests and passions and find people with similar interests in societies and clubs. Check out UQ Edge or get in touch with UQ ambassadors and academic advisors for travel and internship opportunities. When choosing a major, don’t rush. You have the time to try out courses that interest you and align with your goals. Whatever you decide to do, don’t be afraid to have a go because there are support systems at UQ to support you and your dreams.

Tell us about any extra experiences you’ve had.

I travelled to Jakarta, Indonesia as part of a collaboration between UQ’s School of Chemical Engineering and Universitas Indonesia through the New Colombo Plan. During this two-week trip, we had three industrial site visits in which we learnt about the role of chemical engineers in varying branches of chemical engineering including gas, agricultural resources, and metal. I loved working with aspiring chemical engineers from various backgrounds of Indonesia and Australia and participating in cultural activities with the many new friends we made on the trip.
