Degree: Bachelor of Computer Science/Bachelor of Mathematics

Who or what made you choose to study this?

Computer Science and Mathematics are 2 fields that I have been passionate about since a young age. One of my earliest memories is practicing mathematics with my grandfather. On top of that, I have always enjoyed programming ever since High School and this was only furthered when I started to do robotics in high school. As such, I wanted a field to combine both disciplines and that is why I chose to major in Machine Learning at UQ.

What do you love most about your degree?

What I love about Computer Science and in particular Machine Learning is its scope for the future. Nowadays, with everything becoming automated, there is a greater demand for automation experts and machine learning engineers. Furthermore, machine learning is applicable in almost all industries, and I can combine my interest in machine learning with any other discipline I choose such as finance, robotics, mining, geology, etc.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering studying at UQ, what would that be?

Do as much as you can – University is what you make it to be. There are so many different societies and activities to get involved in and this is the time to make both life-long friends and future colleagues I’ve made some lifelong friends through my participation in society events.
