Degree: Bachelor of Computer Science (Programming Languages)

Who or what made you choose to study this?

I really loved coding in high school, but I thought ‘computer science’ sounded terrifying, and I wasn’t very confident with maths, so I talked myself out of it and chose a different degree instead something a little bit more approachable and less heavy on all that abstract computational theory stuff, I thought. Six months later, I was bored and dissatisfied and still desperately wanted to code again, so I decided to give computer science a try, and I absolutely love it. Turns out that abstract computational theory stuff is my favourite part!

Why did you choose to study at UQ?

When I changed degrees, I did a lot of research into the different computer science programs available in Queensland; in the end, I chose UQ because it had such a wide range of course offerings, even within quite a specific study area, which meant I was able to tailor my degree to match my interests. On the other hand, the variety of classes also gave me a chance to include some really interesting electives. Also, the beautiful campus is a nice bonus.

What do you love most about your degree?

I love how much it’s taught me about code itself, and how to make things with it for myself. I’ve never been asked to copy down tutors’ code without knowing what it does, or program a certain way without understanding why. My classes have always helped me see the bigger picture behind coding, and that has made me a much more confident programmer.
