Engineering (Honours)
(Mechatronic)

Why did you choose to study your discipline?

I initially wanted to study Mechanical Engineering at UQ, but after my first year I realised that I loved studying about electronics and software more than mechanical. I chose to study Mechatronics because UQ offered a flexible program where I can choose study more electrical and software subjects but also do the mechanical courses that I wanted. I also started becoming more interested about robotics and I wanted to be involved in developing new technology that would benefit the lives of others.

What advice do you have for prospective students interested in studying engineering, architecture, computer science and/or information technology at UQ?

  1. Mechatronics is a great choice if you’re not sure what disciplines to choose. It has a flexible elective scheme and gives you a taste of the fundamental knowledge needed for electrical, software and mechanical engineering. I found that I loved electrical and software subjects, so I picked most of my electives related to these fields
  2. If you love technology and learning about the theory and practicalities of everything that goes into a robot, this degree is for you
  3. The degree is also very intense and will require a lot of hard work and commitment. There will be stressful times ahead, but if you get a kick out of solving difficult problems along with likeminded peers, and seeing your designs come to life after hours of work, you’ll get through just fine
  4. Throw yourself into clubs and societies in first year, make as many friends as you can! Not only will it make the engineering journey more fun, you’ll be able to support and encourage each other as you go through those hard times together.
  5. I find that the people around you make the journey worth it. If you endure till the end, you’ll leave UQ with a world class degree, lifelong friendships and some great memories.

What do you love most about your degree?

I love that Mechatronics students get exposure to the different disciplines in electrical, software and mechanical engineering. The electives also give us a lot of flexibility to specialise in a particular field that we enjoy.
