Why did you choose to study at UQ?
I visited the St Lucia campus on a Uni Tour in Year 12 and I fell in love with the campus. At the time UQ was also ranked within the Top 50 universities of the world, and I wanted my degree to come from somewhere I was proud of. Before I graduated high school I decided I wanted to leave home and be independent. However, I also needed to do this without breaking my parents’ hearts. Moving to Brisbane and studying at UQ was a good middle ground as I could work on myself and grow as an individual, and still have the opportunity to visit family and friends just a few hours away.
What advice do you have for prospective students interested in studying engineering, architecture, computer science and/or information technology at UQ?
Do not be afraid of change. Whilst it can be unsettling, especially during the transition from high school to university, change is necessary for personal growth and development. You may find that your study habits that got you a high OP or ATAR in high school might not be as effective, or after 3 months you may discover that you don’t actually want to study what you first thought; these are okay as long as you understand that change is not necessarily a bad thing. It is up to you as an individual to take charge of your life, and to create change.
What do you love most about your degree?
The flexibility. A Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) does not lock you into an engineering career for life. A lot of employers seek out engineers for other positions (such as management) due to their experience with soft skills. Things such as communication, problem solving, and critical thinking that other candidates do not have as much as experience in. You can also make a difference in the world. Engineering is all around us, from our computers to roads and buildings. It applies to just about everything, which is pretty neat in my opinion.
