Growing up, I was always following my dad around our property as he dreamt up new ways to improve things, redesigning a retaining wall, finding creative uses for the piles of rocks scattered around our yard by building gabion baskets, or constructing an impressive chicken coop that later withstood a major storm.

At the time, I just thought of these moments as fun projects, but looking back, I realise that the skills my dad was showing me — designing, sketching, creating, and problem-solving — were the very same ones that engineers use every day. The first time I imagined myself as an engineer was when I recognised that those problem-solving instincts and that curiosity to improve the world around me could actually be a career.

I hope the Mobile Makerspace can help regional students have that same realisation: that the creativity, resourcefulness, and hands-on skills they already use in their daily lives are the foundation of engineering and innovation.

Inspire future STEM professionals across regional and remote Queensland through an immersive education experience

The UQ Mobile Makerspace initiative aims to bridge the gap for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students outside major city centres. It also supports hands-on creativity and applied problem-solving, encouraging students to explore a wide range of disciplines, from science, technology and engineering through to architecture, design, planning and other fields that benefit from innovative and interdisciplinary thinking.
