Miranda Mahoney

Alum: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), 2020

As a proud Bidjara woman and Civil Engineer, my journey in STEM began when I attended the Indigenous Australian Engineering School. I learned what on earth a career in STEM was, and saw other people like me pursuing in a career in STEM! I would have never considered a career in Engineering if I hadn’t seen the amazing opportunities in STEM. While I have worked with students as a mentor and volunteer, it is apparent that many students have yet to consider a career in STEM because they do not know it is available to them.

Providing greater access to learning about and partaking in STEM experiences in regional and remote communities through the Mobile Makerspace is a huge step in showing the next generation of STEM professionals (engineers I hope!) what is possible for their future.

Inspire future STEM professionals across regional and remote Queensland through an immersive education experience

The UQ Mobile Makerspace initiative aims to bridge the gap for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students outside major city centres. It also supports hands-on creativity and applied problem-solving, encouraging students to explore a wide range of disciplines, from science, technology and engineering through to architecture, design, planning and other fields that benefit from innovative and interdisciplinary thinking.
