Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Electrical)
Who or what made you choose to study this?
I struggled for a long time in high school with indecisiveness about what I should study. I really enjoyed sciences and maths, but I never even considered engineering because I never knew any engineers and didn’t really understand what it even involved. One of my teachers was the first person to suggest engineering to me, having taken some engineering courses herself at uni, and this is what made me consider engineering and do some research into it for the first time. The versatility, demand, and the broad range of opportunities which an engineering degree provides is ultimately what convinced me to give it a go, and I have no regrets!
Why did you choose to study at UQ?
I chose to study at UQ for several different reasons. I really liked how the UQ engineering program offers the flexible first year option, so you can try out a bit of everything before committing to a specialisation. The location and the campus itself were another big factor for me. Originally being from Northern NSW, UQ wasn’t too far from home, and I really enjoy the atmosphere and the convenience of living in St Lucia. The UQ campus itself is incredible, especially it’s beautiful outdoor spaces and modern facilities, and I love spending time there because of it. I was also aware that UQ is well thought of and prestigious among the wider community, and this helped solidify my decision.
What do you love most about your degree?
I love how collaborative and how social engineering classes are. There is no sense of competitiveness, and as a result everybody is collectively working together to succeed. I’ve gotten to meet so many interesting people in my courses, and it makes every day at uni interesting. I especially love the natural camaraderie between women in engineering, I never feel lonely in class and I’ve built a really strong network despite having come in knowing almost nobody.
What do you hope to do when you graduate?
I hope to pursue a career in the power and energy industry. I am not sure yet whether this will be in the generation, transmission, and/or distribution areas, or in consulting, however I am really interested in renewable energy projects, and I think this is going to be a very interesting and ever-growing field as we move towards a more sustainable and cleaner energy future. I am super keen to be a part of the renewable energy transition!
