(Mechatronics)
Master of Engineering

Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Master of Engineering (Mechatronics Engineering)

Who or what made you choose to study this?

My dad played a big role in inspiring me to pursue Engineering. My dream has always been to work in a field where I can help many people. Initially, I thought the traditional pathway to achieve this dream is to work in the health field. However, I soon realise that being an Engineer allows me to help people at a large-scale. Engineers create solutions to challenging problems that many people often face. This is a rewarding career that also helps people, just in a different way to how health professionals help people.

Why did you choose to study at UQ?

I chose to study at UQ as this university offers so many amazing opportunities such as the exchange program (that I am interested in doing either this year or next year), the leadership program, etc. At UQ, I am also able to learn from world-class professionals in their field. This helps me learn more about my future in the Engineering field. The campus and social life is definitely an added bonus.

What do you love most about your degree?

The ability to combine creativity and problem-solving skills is definitely the thing I love most about my degree. Since I’m doing Mechatronics Engineering, I get to learn about the mechanical, electrical and software aspect of engineering, and experience first hand how these three are integrated to develop a control system. I also love how engineers are helping the world at a large scale by making solutions with sustainability at the forefront of the vision.

What’s been your favourite course so far and why?

My favourite course so far is METR2800. METR2800 is the group project for Mechatronics student in second year. I was able to put everything I have learnt previously to build a robot from scratch that can perform the given task. The nature of this course is also quite challenging which further motivated me to learn more about what kind of things Mechatronics engineers will do in the work field. My professors and tutors have also made this course very enjoyable with their constant support and jokes.
