Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Honour), Majoring in Chemical and Bioprocess
Who or what made you choose to study this?
In high school, I was always strong in the sciences and considered various fields like optometry, medicine, speech pathology, and occupational therapy. I ultimately chose a Bachelor of Advanced Science, knowing I had a passion for chemistry. However, after two years of study and immersing myself in opportunities within the science field, I realized I wanted a degree with a stronger focus on practical application.
After being a part of countless research projects and volunteering as a research assistant under a lab at UQ, it helped me recognize that I was more drawn to problem-solving, process design, and large-scale applications—making chemical engineering a better fit for my interests and career goals. Now, I truly feel that I’ve made the right decision. Knowing that I can contribute to building a more sustainable future makes it even more rewarding.
Why did you choose to study at UQ?
Since year 11 when I was considering what degree I wanted to do, and which university I want to go to, UQ has been one of my top choices. Ultimately, I chose to study at UQ because of its strong reputation and the incredible opportunities it offers for academic, professional, and personal growth. The flexibility of its programs allowed me to shape my studies around my interests, which made it the perfect choice. Plus, after visiting the campus at open day, I could really see myself studying here—the beautiful surroundings and amazing study spaces was icing on the cake.
What do you love most about your degree?
What I love most about my degree is how it combines problem-solving with real-world applications. I enjoy learning how chemical processes can be designed and optimized to create more efficient and sustainable solutions. It’s exciting to see how the concepts I study can be applied to industries that have a real impact on the world, from energy to environmental sustainability.
What’s been your favourite course so far and why?
My favourite course so far has been ENG1100. Coming from a content-heavy chemistry degree, this course was a breath of fresh air with its hands-on and practical approach. I was a bit nervous about the challenge of building a floating house, but it was so exciting to step into UQ Innovate, get hands-on with tools, and work with my team to create a functional motor system. Leading my team through the project, overcoming countless challenges, and finally seeing our house succeed was an incredibly rewarding experience.
