Degree: Bachelor of Computer Science (Data Science / Cyber Security)

Who or what made you choose to study this?

I always excelled at computer science in high school, although I did find the programming aspect challenging, but it was always so fun and satisfying to solve a problem by thinking like a computer scientist. When I was 11 I watched The Imitation Game which is about Alan Turing’s role in WW2, and I was beyond fascinated with him. I found it so interesting, and inspiring that I decided I also wanted to do similar things in the field of computer science.

What’s been your favourite course so far and why?

I loved CSSE2010. I think it was because we got to play around with physical things like breadboards for assignments, but it was the most fun I’ve ever had in a course. I also loved how it taught the low-level aspects of computer science like binary and logic and state machines. I think it was very interesting to understand what makes a computer a computer.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering studying at UQ, what would that be?

Just do it. There’s such a wide variety of degrees and courses that you could do, your options are endless. It’s also incredibly easy to make friends, so your work-life balance will be really good. I was sceptical about UQ at first but now I can’t imagine myself anywhere but here.
