Engineering (Honours)
(Civil)

Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Civil)

Who or what made you choose to study this?

I’ve always loved maths and was passionate about pursuing a career that involved numbers and critical thinking. When I was in grade 9 I had my first real introduction to the world of engineering during a design and technologies class – that’s when I knew it was the field for me. I fell in love with problem-solving and later discovered that I could fulfil my desire to make an impact in the world through my career if I made the right decisions.
I later chose to study Civil Engineering specifically as I developed a passion for developing cities and spaces to be more sustainable and considerate of future growth.

What do you love most about your degree?

I love the flexibility of the Civil Engineering degree with the opportunity to work anywhere in the world on a variety of projects and cases. I also love the flexibility of being able to choose to work outside with steel caps on or at an office desk in the air-con and having the ability to switch at any stage throughout your career.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering studying at UQ, what would that be?

My advice would be to involve yourself in the clubs and societies to build your network and meet people. You will grow a lot faster in engineering if you meet people and build connections. Having a support network around you makes the university a lot easier and also helps foster a healthy balance between studying and social life.
