Master of Cyber Security

Degree: Bachelor of Computer Science / Master of Cyber Security

Who or what made you choose to study this?

Ever since I remember I’ve always loved maths, and my high school teachers only fostered that love even more. From that, I knew I wanted to pursue studies in some type of engineering or maths and once my dad suggested computer science, I was terrified. I had never written a single line of code in my life, but after some YouTube tutorials I wrote my first code - print(’Hello world!’) - and I was obsessed.

I felt so empowered, so it was only natural for me to pursue studies in computer science. After more research into the tech industry, I was scared, to say the least. Reading about the rise of AI scared me, so I chose to major in cyber security so that I could properly be informed about these technological threats but also learn how to protect myself and others from them.

What do you love most about your degree?

Coming from a non-programmatic background, I love seeing myself grow by progressing through assignments of varying difficulties. It shows me how far I’ve come in my journey of programming and problem-solving, and how much more there is to come! The pure rush of relief and joy after seeing my code run is unrivalled and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering studying at UQ, what would that be?

Put yourself out there because what you put in is what you get out! UQ has so many clubs and societies to offer! Surround yourself with others doing the same courses as you! Be sure to maintain a balanced social and academic lifestyle. It not only relieves unnecessary stressors, but having a support system helps keep a clearer mind during stressful periods such as exam blocks.
