Engineering (Honours)
(Mechanical)

Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechanical)

Who or what made you choose to study this?

I have always had a love of learning and problem solving especially in maths and science so engineering seemed like the logical choice for me. I love to build, design and work hands on with projects which is what lead me to choice Mechanical Engineering as my discipline.

How did you find out about UQ?

I am local to Brisbane so have always known the University and its amazing opportunities.

Did you attend any events at UQ in the lead up to choosing to come here? If so please tell us what.

I attended open day the year before starting at UQ and it felt like a place, I could see myself being and learning.

What kinds of things did you want to know when you were choosing what university to go to?

I mainly wanted to know more about the process of how starting university worked but as I went through it everything fit into place. I think its more of that understanding that you will figure what you need to know out as it happens.

Why did you choose to study at UQ?

I chose to study at UQ cause of the history of quality education, the opportunities it offered and doors it opened for me and my future career. When touring the university on open day I felt very calm and peaceful walking around campus; I could really see myself learning, growing and developing at UQ.

The engineering program also offered the major I was most interested in and I knew graduating for UQ would put me at the top amongst other graduates. I was also blown away with all of the facilities as well and loved all of the different equipment and technology in the mechanical engineering building. Since starting at UQ, I have loved the social aspects of all the engineering societies plus clubs in the wider UQ community like UQSKI.

What are your favourite facilities and resources available to you at UQ?

My favourite facilities are the first- and second-year learning centres as they are the perfect place to study where you will always find people doing the same courses as you. I also loved using the facilities in the Mansergh Shaw Building during ENGG1100.

What’s been your favourite course so far and why?

I loved doing ENGG1100 which is the group project based subject that everyone doing engineering takes in first year because I loved being about to actually create something and have it work. Unlike other assessment types you actually had to have a fully functioning floating house to do well and that challenge was lots of fun.

It was a big learning experience especially right from high school as you get left to your own devices to research, purchase and create something that fits the task. It also helped that I had an amazing group who were all keen to help out and do the best we could. We had lots of laughs and fun in between the stress.

Highlights of your past year at UQ

My highlight from the past year at UQ is the trips I have been able to go on with the clubs. In July I went on the UQSKI’s annual trip to Queenstown which was the most amazing trip ever. I met so many amazing people, some of which are my best friends today, and we had so much fun skiing and exploring.

In December I went on the UQ sailing’s annual trip to the Whitsundays where we sailed around the island for a week on a catamaran. The club hires multiple catamarans and has qualified skippers to sail so all we had to do was sit back, relax and get our tan on. It was the most magical trip and was the perfect way to end the year.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering studying at UQ, what would that be?

My advice would be to not stress too much about how things work and what you need to do before starting, I remember being really overwhelmed when enrolling but just take it 1 step at a time and everything will fall into place and make sense once Uni begins, and if it doesn’t there are so many people who can help.

Once you start Uni and get onto of the academic side a bit I highly recommend getting involved with clubs, societies and events, it makes things so much more fun. Also actually show up to lectures and classes, it’s the best way to meet people who them motivate and help you through the course. Also
