UQ has an ongoing maintenance and monitoring program at Indooroopilly Mine, which includes monthly site inspections to ensure ongoing site safety, compliance and asset management.
During the inspection on 3 July 2026, we identified ground subsidence around the headframe, including deterioration of the timbers around the shaft and associated ground movement.
In response, we extended the perimeter fence around the mine entrance and commissioned an independent specialist assessment. The assessment found that the headframe structure is placing pressure on the ground around the shaft and that its steel supports are under strain, increasing potential safety risks if left in place.
For safety, and to enable remediation works, the head frame will be removed from the mine site. Once removed, works will be undertaken to stabilise the ground around the top of the shaft and prevent further subsidence.
Planning and investigations are underway during July and August, with removal and remediation works expected to commence in late August, subject to regulatory approvals.
During works, a large mobile crane and elevated work platforms will be required on site and there will be restricted access to the carpark closest to reception. There will be increased activity and construction noise during this period, although Property and Facilities will aim to minimise disruption as much as possible.
More details will be shared once a construction methodology has been developed.
Fencing and exclusion zone signage are currently in place around the work area. The rest of the Indooroopilly site remains safe for staff and partners.
