The University of Queensland has strengthened its position as a world-leading engineering institution, with Mineral and Mining Engineering ranked fifth globally and Chemical Engineering ranked number one in Australia and 36th in the world, in the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
UQ’s rise into the global top five for Mineral and Mining Engineering highlights the University’s leadership in education and research in sustainable resources, minerals processing and mining innovation, capability areas that are critical for Queensland, Australia and the world as industries transition toward lower carbon futures.

In Chemical Engineering, UQ has maintained is number one spot as Australia’s leading university and has risen three places globally. The result highlights research and education outcomes that support sustainable energy systems, advanced manufacturing, environmental protection and improved community wellbeing.

Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology, Professor Liesl Folks, said the rankings recognised UQ Engineering’s strong global impact and relevance.
“UQ Engineering is deeply connected to industry and focused on equipping future engineers with the skills and experience needed to tackle some of the world’s most pressing and complex challenges, particularly in areas critical to a sustainable future,” Professor Folks said.“These results reflect the exceptional calibre of our people and the impact of our discipline-leading research.”
UQ Engineering’s global standing is underpinned by close partnerships with industry, internationally recognised research strengths, and graduates who are highly sought after by employers worldwide.
These results reflect the collective contribution of UQ staff, students, alumni and partners, whose work continues to strengthen the quality and impact of the University’s education and research.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject assess more than 1,900 institutions globally, based on indicators including academic and employer reputation, research citations, H index and international research collaboration.
