Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Electrical)

Who or what made you choose to study this?

Engineering has always been a passion of mine. I remember that, from a young age I was always fascinated by spacecraft and computers. I choose to study Electrical Engineering as I’ve always been fascinated by technology and how it is shaping the world around us. It’s a really wide field with many interesting and emerging technologies from Quantum Computing to Artificial Intelligence to Brain Machine interfaces and the power grid. Both my father and grandpa are engineers as well so I guess it runs in the family too!

Why did you choose to study at UQ?

UQ provides so many opportunities for growth. It’s got a strong reputation for engineering, cutting-edge research and connections with the industry which are crucial in this day and age. It also has a friendly cohort and it really does feel like you’re part of a special community here. This makes studying and collaboration with class mates much better. I also choose UQ due to its accessible location which is convenient in terms of travel.

What do you love most about your degree?

I love the hands on aspect of it. Albert Einstein once said this famous quote; “In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not”. In essence, learning the theory can only take you so far and applying it to real life is a whole different beast. Personally, I find the practical side of things very rewarding and satisfying (especially when your idea works better than you expected it to).

Another thing I like about my degree is the community. It feels like we’re all in this together with engineering at UQ- we all know how tough it is and everyone helps each other out.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering studying at UQ, what would that be?

I would highly recommend studying at UQ. UQs a healthy and friendly place to study at no matter your degree. Also- take all the opportunities available to you. No matter what it is and always be open to trying new things. You never know what you might like until you try it out yourself.
