Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Software) / Master of Engineering
Who or what made you choose to study this?
I had always loved math and science (plus I was quite good at both), and so I always knew STEM was the path for me, ever since primary school.
I have always been invested in solving whatever problems that I was faced with and with the rush of accomplishment when finding the answer to a particularly difficult question. I grew up respecting engineering as a profession for how much they have contributed to our everyday lives.
At my high school, I was lucky to be offered the chance to study digital solutions, where I had the chance to build games, program robotic cars and build websites. I had found the thing I enjoyed the most and as they say, “if you do what you enjoy, you will never work a day in your life.”
So, I chose to follow my passion and study software engineering.
Why did you choose to study at UQ?
I had a glimpse into the incredible support networks that UQ offers in grade 10 as a UQ science ambassador. I was initially interested in studying at UQ because of the women in engineering network and the vibrant social life, diverse group of people, and student societies that are offered.
I knew that that UQ was the university for me during a year 12 tour arranged by my high school guidance counsellor and I saw the campus and the student life, and heard about the incredible support networks that UQ offers.
What do you love most about your degree?
I love the group projects the most, where you get to work with diverse groups of people for a singular purpose, getting to put everyone’s knowledge and experience to use to see some incredible results.
I love how engineering isn’t just knowledge based like I assumed from the start, but instead is designed to foster a sense of responsibility in you and to teach you not to just think about what you are producing, but also who you are producing it for and how to best help them solve the problem in practice that your project is trying to fix.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering studying at UQ, what would that be?
That you should try as hard as you can to learn as much as you can, join some of the incredible clubs, societies and experiences that UQ has to offer. The most important thing is to enjoy it as much as you can.
