Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) / Master of Engineering
Who or what made you choose to study this?
Coming out of high school, I was not sure of what to study, but I knew I wanted a career that was both intellectually challenging and impactful. I had heard that engineering is a very broad field that opens a lot of doors to opportunities, both within and outside of engineering. The flexibility that this degree provides appealed to me, as it meant I could continue to explore different pathways even during my studies.
To gain a deeper understanding of the different disciplines, I chose the flexible-first year option before picking a specialisation, as this allowed me complete introductory courses of multiple fields. Since I really enjoyed everything that each of those courses had to offer, I decided to specialise in mechatronics engineering as it combined elements from multiple disciplines, offering a well-rounded foundation for my interests.
Why did you choose to study at UQ?
After committing to engineering, I chose to study at UQ as it is the top university in Queensland for engineering and technology, offering strong industry connections and great facilities. Additionally, the integrated Bachelors and Master program really appealed to my love for learning as it would allow me to gain the most out of my undergraduate degree.
What do you love most about your degree?
My favourite thing about engineering, especially mechatronics, is the flexibility it offers in the coursework. The wide range of advanced engineering and master’s electives allowed me to explore specific paths within mechatronics. Ultimately, I have chosen to focus on the mechanical aspect of mechatronics, while still gaining valuable knowledge in electrical, computer, and control engineering.
What’s been your favourite course so far and why?
My favourite course has been METR2800, the Mechatronics System Design Project I, as it was my first opportunity to integrate the technical skills that I had developed from previous courses. As someone who learns best through hands-on experience, I found this course invaluable in reinforcing my understanding of mechatronics. It also introduced me to working on an engineering project in a team environment, helping me develop collaboration and problem-solving skills. Additionally, this course has also created opportunities for me to participate in an international competition and apply my knowledge and experiences to future system design projects.
