Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechanical) / Master of Engineering
Who or what made you choose to study this?
When I was deciding what I wanted to do after high school, I felt conflicted by the numerous options available to me. However, attending the WE Spring into Engineering camp provided me with a transformative perspective on the field. This experience revealed the innovative potential of engineering to me, showcasing its unique blend of creativity and scientific precision.
Why did you choose to study at UQ?
At the Spring into Engineering Camp, I discovered a supportive community at UQ, where students empower one another in navigating their degrees, and building rewarding careers. I also live nearby and have engaged in numerous other events and extra-curriculars at UQ. I knew that I would be returning to an environment I was comfortable in which would nurture my ambitions within and outside of my degree.
What do you love most about your degree?
I love that it has given me the opportunity to meet like-minded students, tutors, and lecturers and created pathways for me to establish lasting connections and friendships. The numerous in person practicals, workshops, and tutorials that the engineering timetable incorporates encourage me to develop friendships with people that I may not have otherwise met. I’ve found that in my time at UQ I’m never alone and I always have people that I can rely on to ask for help or just have lunch with.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering studying at UQ, what would that be?
Any university in Australia is amazing but UQ is incomparable in its ability to provide amazing student experiences and a beautiful, well-maintained campus to study at; as well as incredibly thought-out courses and content to maximise your uni experience. There are numerous degrees, social clubs, and facilities for students to access which gives students the opportunity to aid their mental and physical health whilst studying.
Have you participated in any internships / work? If so tell us a bit about it, what did you enjoy most about the experience?
I have not participated in any internships/work to do with my degree just yet, but I have been working since I was 15 at casual/part-time jobs. This has increased my ability to work within teams to achieve a shared goal, and has improved my determination and resilience – so that I am able to bounce back when I encounter hardships. I’m able to manage my time effectively to combine work with study and social opportunities, thus developing skills to enhance communication and my confidence.
