Across Queensland, students in regional and remote areas are full of creativity and curiosity, eager to explore, solve problems, and make their ideas real. But opportunities to engage with hands-on STEM learning can be hard to come by outside of major centres. This lack of access creates barriers to building Queensland’s future skilled workforce and limits pathways into emerging related STEM careers.

The UQ Mobile Makerspace helps bridge that gap. By hitting the road and travelling directly to regional and rural communities, it brings practical STEM experiences to students right where they live, providing access to tools like 3D printers, robotics kits, and digital design platforms.
These workshops are designed to help students build skills, confidence, and a deeper interest in STEM. They also share crucial information about STEM education and career pathways, helping students connect what they’re learning today to real opportunities tomorrow.

According to Sam Metzroth, Manager, Marketing Operations and Customer Experience at TAFE Queensland the UQ Mobile Makerspace was a huge hit at the recent South Burnett Career Market, with the engaging, hands-on activities proving incredibly popular with attendees of all ages.
“It sparked curiosity, creativity, and conversation, and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who interacted with it - it was a fantastic addition to the event,” Sam said.
Vince Kelly, Innovation Group Manager and head of the Makerspace team shared the real purpose of the Makerspace.
“The goal of the Makerspace isn’t just to teach technology,” he said.
“It’s to inspire the next generation of Engineers, Architects, Designers, Scientists and innovators, no matter where they live, and show them the educational and career pathway opportunities on offer.”

And because the Mobile Makerspace is fully funded by donors, schools and students don’t pay a thing, making it accessible to communities that might otherwise miss out.
