Hundreds of secondary students will see first-hand the endless possibilities that come with a career in technology at this year’s BiG Day In event, held at The University of Queensland.
Leading industry professionals will provide students with an insight on the current technology landscape and highlight the diverse employment opportunities that digital skills can offer.
Head of the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering Professor Michael Bruenig said that as technology grows, so does the employment opportunities that come with it.
“We know that more than half of children entering primary school today will work in jobs that don’t exist yet,” he said.
“We also know that 92 per cent of future jobs will require some kind of digital skills.”
“The students coming through university today will play a key role in the creation, development, implementation and evaluation of technology,” Professor Bruenig said.
Students attending the event will hear from industry leaders from global companies and will have the opportunity to ask about experiences, internships and graduate programs.
Australian Computer Society Foundation Executive Director John Ridge AM said the BiG Day In Brisbane event at UQ formed part of a national series of events that reach approximately 8000 students each year.
“Since we started running the BiG Day In events seven years ago, more than 30,000 students across Australia have gained a vital industry perspective on a career in STEM,” Mr Ridge said.
“It is encouraging and rewarding for all of those involved to see the reaction and enthusiasm from the attendees to find out this information.
“It helps them to make better informed decisions about their future careers.”
The event, hosted at UQ’s Advanced Engineering Building, is also a great opportunity for teachers, career advisors and other universities in southeast Queensland to equip themselves with the latest information to inspire students to pursue a technology-based career.
