Engineering students innovate at international workshop

16 Aug 2018

Six UQ engineering students have returned from the latest Innovation Workshop held at the Technical University of Denmark.

This year was the first time UQ had taken part, choosing a group of fourth year students to join representatives from a number of leading universities from across the globe, including Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Nanyang Technological University and DTU.

During the two-week workshop students worked intensively on six different research projects relating to nanotechnology and engineering sustainability.

Chemical Engineering student Joseph Otte said students were able to provide a fresh perspective and innovative solutions to current research problems with a real world focus.

“We left after the two weeks having provided a useful research plan for future work, which will be used as a guide for PhD projects and beyond,” he said.

“It is exciting to see that the work we conducted in just a short two weeks will provide tangible results and be of use to the research group we were involved in at DTU.”

Students in Denmark

During their down time, students were shown the sites of Copenhagen by local DTU students, including a canal tour of the city, walking the King’s old hunting grounds and a trip to the Tivoli, the second oldest amusement park in the world.

Chemical Engineering student Anthony Hay said the workshop was great preparation for the workforce.

“The workshop was a great mixture of hard work, companionship, learning and discussions, which I feel has changed and improved the way I think about and approach problems under strict time pressures.”

UQ’s School of Chemical Engineering Industry Engagement Academic Beverly Coulter accompanied students to the workshop and said they managed to hold their own against a group of bright international students.

“They were challenged but were able to deliver and present work of real value to the DTU academics,” she said.

The University of Queensland has been selected to host the next Innovation Workshop in June 2019, bringing staff and students from some of the world’s leading technological universities to UQ’s St Lucia campus.
