The UQ Advanced Centre for Water and Environmental Biotechnology (formerly AWMC) has launched the Master of Engineering in Urban Water Engineering program, to commence in February 2019.
The world is becoming progressively more urbanised and the number of modern megacities is increasing worldwide.
This poses new challenges to urban utilities, planners, and engineers, as the existing water sources and infrastructure are usually unable to easily cope with the increasing water and pollutant flows.
Globally, there is shortage of engineers with expertise in all aspects of the urban water cycle and their reciprocal influence and integration.
AWMC Director and ARC Laureate Fellow, Professor Zhiguo Yuan, said this new course would provide a niche opportunity in the comprehensive postgraduate training program.
“The water industry is facing serious challenges arising from climate change, population growth, and continued urbanization,” said Professor Yuan.
“We will deliver high-quality training to develop next-generation urban water engineers and water planners to bring fresh insight and integrated solutions to the water industry.”
The new program's Course Coordinator, Dr Gilda Carvalho, said the program that is accredited by Engineers Australia,& provides a path for non-accredited engineers to achieve entry-level engineering accreditation.
“This program provides a great opportunity to be able to use the outstanding expertise of AWMC in the area for the professional development of the next generation of urban water engineers.” said Dr Carvalho.
UQ’s Master of Engineering has been designed to include business and innovation courses so graduating students are better prepared to take on more senior, leadership roles.
These master's degree students will develop advanced, integrated and applied knowledge in urban water management, and have the opportunity to learn world-leading practice through placements with an Australian industry partner.
Students will also have the opportunity to further advance their study and qualifications through an AWMC research higher degree program.
