WE Explore welcomes 150 potential engineers to UQ

8 May 2017

UQ Women in Engineering (WE) welcomed 150 female students from 34 high schools to the UQ St Lucia for WE Explore Engineering Day on 4 May 2017.

Senior high school students from across Brisbane participated in three engineering-inspired workshops of their choice, which showcased how engineers are society’s problem solvers.

From creating a prosthetic limb to launching rockets and building robots, the hands-on workshops encouraged students to work in teams and engage their problem-solving skills.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the workshops, with one student saying "My favourite workshop was Prosthetic Limb by Engineers Without Borders because it was interesting to see how engineering can help people in need.”

“I really enjoyed the Australian Youth Aerospace Association's (AYAA) rockets workshop because it was fun to design, create and test our own rocket,” said another student.

“My favourite workshop was 3D manufacturing because I was intrigued by the concept of the 3D printer and how it can turn ideas into a reality very quickly and efficiently.”

Thank you also to Engineers Without Borders, Robogals, the Australian Youth Aerospace Association (AYAA), Boeing, UQ academics and post-graduate students who organised and ran workshops throughout the day. The day, which is run every year, is made possible thanks to the ongoing support and commitment of UQ Women in Engineering's program partners - Rio Tinto, API, APPEA and Origin Foundation.

The next Women in Engineering event, Engineering Futures Evening, will be held on Thursday 20 July 2017. Registrations are open now for this event.

For students living in regional south-east Queensland, including Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast, Bundaberg, Maryborough, Gympie, Warwick and Torbanlea, students will be able to participate in Engineering Futures evening and WE Explore Engineering Day-Regional. This event will be held over the 20 and 21 July 2017. Please see the workshops here, and visit the WE website for more details.
