Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Civil and Commerce)
Who or what made you choose to study this?
I chose to study Engineering and commerce because I have always a strong interest for Maths and Science as well as problem solving. During school I was really drawn to doing those subjects as they challenged me to think logically and apply concepts to real-world situations. This is what drew me to Civil Engineering. I
also really enjoy the creative side of engineering, particularly designing structures and finding innovate solutions. Alongside this, I also developed an interest in business, which led me to do a dual degree in commerce. Combining both degrees allows be to build technical and problem-solving skills while also understanding the business side of engineering projects, which I believe will be valuable for my future career.
How did you find out about UQ?
Through school (e.g. careers fairs) and attending open days for UQ
Did you attend any events at UQ in the lead up to choosing to come here? If so please tell us what.
Open Day
What kinds of things did you want to know when you were choosing what university to go to?
I firstly wanted to know the academics of my program (e.g. teaching style, more hands on or lecture heavy) this helped me understand how I would be learning and if it suited me. I also looked into the facilities (online and in person), including libraries, study spaces and labs to make sure I’d have what I needed to study and make the overall experience better. Finally, personally the most important, the campus life and culture, such as the clubs, events and overall environment. I wanted to find a university where I felt comfortable to get involved, try new things, make lots of friends and enjoy learning.
Why did you choose to study at UQ?
I chose to study at UQ because of its strong reputation for both its Engineering and Business programs. I was also drawn to the high-quality facilities, from modern labs to study spaces, that help support a balance of theory and hands-on learning. Also, the campus environment and culture really appealed to me as there are a wide range of clubs and activities. I especially liked the green spaces around campus, which creates a relaxed atmosphere and provides great places to study or spend time with friends.
What are your favourite facilities and resources available to you at UQ?
My favourite facilities and resources available to me at UQ would be the vast amount of study spaces. Whether it’s in a library or on a bench under a tree in the great court, there is so many places where I can focus and get work done. I also love the engineering labs and equipment, which allow for more hands-on learning making the course more enjoyable. Not just in person but the online resources and support services (Blackboard, Library) have been really helpful for keeping up with course work.
What’s been your favourite course so far and why?
Professional Engineering (ENGG1100), It was such a fun and rewarding subject. I really loved the project-based learning where I could apply engineering knowledge to a real-world problem. Designing flood-resistant housing was both challenging and meaningful, as it highlighted how important the work of engineers are. Being able to also see how the project progressed over time, from initial ideas to the final prototype was so satisfying. Working in a team was also another highlight, as it helped me further develop my communication and collaboration skills while learning from others.
Highlights of your past year at UQ
I’ve really loved all of the connections and friendships I’ve I built with people over the past year. Joining clubs, going to events and going to my classes helped me connect with like-minded people and made the whole university experience more enjoyable.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering studying at UQ, what would that be?
Don’t be worried! I know starting university can be a very daunting task but its so exciting and fun. I would highly recommend making the most of the resources and opportunities available. Sign up to as many clubs and attend as many events as possible, it’s a great way of meeting new like-minded people and get the most out of your university experience. Also, please go to your classes… at least for the first few weeks. It’s also another great way on meeting new people.
Have you participated in any internships / work? If so tell us a bit about it, what did you enjoy most about the experience?
Not yet but I have applied/planning to apply to a few in the next upcoming months to help me gain more real-world experience plus figure out where I see myself in a few years.
What do you hope to do when you graduate?
At this stage, I’m still undecided on what area I want to specialise in Civil Engineering after I graduate. However, I hope to work in an industry that not only challenges me but also allows me to continue learning and build new skills. I’m also interested in working in projects that have a meaningful impact on society, particular in areas where I can apply both my engineering and business knowledge.
Are you a member of any student societies / participate in extra curricular activities? Tell us a bit about it.
I am member of EUS and the subsociety of CESA plus UQBA. I really love how many events these societies offer, from social to networking, there is just so much for anyone.
Did you achieve the initial ATAR you wanted to get into your chosen program? If not, tell us a bit about your journey as to how you got into the degree you are studying now.
I wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted to do when I chose my QTAC preferences, so I tried to aim for the highest possible and put in effort, so I kept my options open.
