Bringing UQ across Queensland to inspire the next generation of engineers, architects, designers, scientists, and innovators — no matter where they live.
About the Mobile Makerspace
The UQ Mobile Makerspace is a fully equipped, interactive workshop that travels to regional and rural communities across Queensland. Inside, students find tools like 3D printers, robotics kits, laser cutters, and digital design platforms, giving them the chance to create, experiment, and innovate — just like they would in a university lab or design studio.
It delivers practical experiences across engineering, architecture, design, urban planning, computer science, and IT, right where students live and learn. Each visit transforms into a hub of discovery. Students design solutions to real-world problems, prototype ideas, and test their creations in a collaborative, hands-on environment. Whether it’s coding a robot, exploring the aerodynamics of a boomerang, or designing a model bridge, the Makerspace shows students how creativity and technology combine to shape the world around them.

Why It Matters
Across Queensland, many students are bursting with creativity and curiosity but lack access to hands-on STEM experiences outside major centres. This limits opportunities to explore their potential and build pathways into the emerging careers that will define Queensland’s future.
The UQ Mobile Makerspace bridges that gap, bringing UQ’s expertise and resources directly to schools and communities. By making practical STEM learning accessible to all, the program helps level the playing field for regional students, ensuring that distance doesn’t limit discovery. These experiences build skills, confidence, and curiosity, helping students connect what they learn in the classroom to future study and career opportunities in engineering, design, computing, and beyond.
