Engineering First Year Recommended Enrolment Plans

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) students have the option to complement their engineering specialisation with a major or minor in one of the new and emerging areas of engineering. The broad range of majors allows students to further tailor their studies to match career aspirations and deep dive into interests.

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) / Master of Engineering students will undertake a full-time placement with industry or a research institution either in Australia or overseas in their 5th year of study.

First Year Recommended Enrolment Plans provide additional information specifically intended for commencing students. These plans are the best support for first year engineering students, with Study Plans providing a supplementary support resource for planning beyond first year. It is recommended to first consult your relevant First Year Recommended Enrolment Plan during your first year, then utilise your relevant recommended study plan beyond first year.

UQ Terminology

Before we get to the details, it is important to know some of the UQ terminology:

Your 'program' is the degree you are enrolled in. For example, the BE(Hons) is a program; and the BE(Hons)/BSc is a dual degree program.

A 'course' is one subject (for example, ENGG1100). Most courses at UQ are worth two units (#2). A normal full-time study load is four courses (8 units or #8) per semester.

'Electives' are flexible courses that can enable a choice from a specified list. The courses available for selection depend upon what type of elective you are using, BE(Hons) and BE(Hons)/ME programs have: General Electives, Program Electives, Breadth Electives, Advanced Electives and Masters Electives. Ensure the electives chosen satisfy your program requirements.

A 'specialisation' is one of the 6 disciplines of engineering that you must choose from during your second year of your program which contain courses specific to that topic. Examples include; Chemical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering.
