Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/ Biotechnology, Chemical/ Medical
Who or what made you choose to study this?
Throughout high school, I always loved math, chemistry, and biology and during Year 12, I felt sad to think that I might have to give these subjects up when I started university. I couldn’t imagine that there was a degree out there for me that could incorporate these areas until I found the UQ dual degree in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. I was sure I’d change my mind and decide on a totally different degree since nothing seemed to be sticking with me, but after a while, I knew it was for me.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering studying at UQ, what would that be?
Read through the degrees list on the website, look at the courses each degree offers and go to the open days. Just reading the name of a degree doesn’t explain much about it but when you look at what you can major in and what courses you can take, you get a better understanding of whether it’s the right degree for you. Going to the open day allows you to look around the campus and talk to staff and students about UQ.
Are you a member of any student societies / participate in extra curricular activities? Tell us a bit about it.
I am a member of EUS, ChESS, and Skirts. These societies are a great way to engage in fun activities during the semester and to meet people who are studying your degree or to meet people who are studying completely different things than you.
What do you hope to do when you graduate?
I hope to work in a biomedical engineering field and to research and design medical devices and treatments.
