Top 10 placement must-dos – your field guide to success
Placements can seem a little overwhelming, but if you follow this simple checklist, you’ll be prepared to put your best foot forward and make a great impression with your industry provider.
1. Ask around!
Chat to your classmates — if they’ve done a placement, they’ll have golden advice (and maybe even some "what not to do" stories).
2. Don’t ghost the paperwork
UQ forms, approvals, modules... save yourself some stress and do them before you start. Future you will thank you.
3. Reach out like a pro
Email or call your industry supervisor before day one — confirm your start time, location, and what to bring. It shows you’re on top of it.
4. Prep like it’s the first day of school
Plan your route, pick your outfit, pack a solid lunch — and aim to arrive 5 minutes early. First impressions matter!
5. Do a little pre-placement prep
Check out the host organisation’s website, social media, and any recent news or projects. The more you know before you start, the more confident and clued-in you'll feel!
6. Ask how they like to work
Everyone’s different — check in with your supervisor about their style and tee up regular catch-ups to stay on track.
7. Say hi, not just bye
Introduce yourself to the team, ask about their roles, and get curious. It’s a great way to build your network and feel more at home.
8. Get tech-ready
Scope out your desk, login details, and any systems you’ll need. If anything’s missing, flag it early so you're not stuck later.
9. Folder = Lifesaver
Create a folder in your inbox for important docs, approvals or agreements. Drag, drop, done. Trust us, you’ll need it.
10. Safety first, always
Learn the emergency procedures and find out who your WHS contacts are. It’s not just box-ticking — it’s about looking after yourself and others.
