Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Chemical)/Master of Engineering
What do you study and what year are you in?
I am currently in my fourth year of Chemical Engineering in the BE/ME program.
Who or what made you choose to study this?
Ever since I remember, I have always had a love for learning with maths being my favourite subject in school. I was always curious and eager to learn more whether it was a problem-solving question, experiment, or design challenge. From this, I knew I wanted to undertake to engineering going into university. However, I was unsure of what major to choose and was tossing up between mechanical and chemical engineering. After having a chat with my uncle who has qualifications in both fields, he gave me some insight into what it’s like to work in the industry. I found that I wanted to learn more about how products are formed and not only how they work as I believe chemical engineering would allow me to gain a greater understanding of processes on a deeper level by applying my interest in chemistry and maths.
What do you love most about your degree?
Although studying engineering is challenging, I have grown to enjoy the problem-solving process and the hard work required to calculate an answer or develop new innovative solutions. I believe my degree is challenging yet rewarding and has enhanced my critical thinking and also my communication and leadership skills. I also find it motivating that one day the knowledge and skills I acquire through my degree today, whether technical or interpersonal, can make a contribution to society and benefit others.
