Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechanical)

Who or what made you choose to study this?

When I first arrived at UQ, I was enrolled to study a Bachelor of Business Management/Arts majoring in Geography and Music. After a year of study, a program change to Economics and a 6 month break, I finally decided that engineering was the right path for me! I had desperately wanted to find a way to combine my love of problem solving with my desire to have a positive impact on society and the environment through my work. An engineering degree ticked all of my boxes and delivered me an exciting goal to work towards. Although it took an extra 2 years to come to this realisation, I have never looked back and have enjoyed every second!

What do you love most about your degree?

I honestly really enjoy how challenging it can be at times. I love solving difficult problems and pushing myself to the limit as it is such a rewarding experience when all of the hard work has paid off. I also love collaborating with different people each semester and learning a lot about myself along the way. It’s very exciting to be working towards a career in which I will be able to contribute positively to society.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

I initially hope to work for an engineering consulting firm to gain real-life experience and skills by contributing to a range of different projects. I would also love to work overseas and gain a wider knowledge of what engineering is across different parts of the world. Ultimately, I hope to become a specialist within a niche technical field. I am very excited to see where my career takes me in the future.
