Try as many different courses as possible in first year so you can get an understanding of all the different possibilities.

Hi, I'm  Yu-Zhen Eva,

I'm a Fourth Year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) student Specialising in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering. I caught up with the Women in Engineering team to chat all things engineering and share my top tips for first year engineering students.

What or who inspired you to choose engineering?

I’ve always wanted to study a degree that would allow me to give back and create tangible change. I love the idea of being able to accomplish this through creating and problem-solving for long term solutions in engineering.

Why did you choose the discipline you are studying?

I chose to study Chemical and Biomedical Engineering because it is such a broad specialisation and major that allows me to work across a variety of disciplines, and with a variety of industries. Additionally, I have always loved all of physics, chemistry, and biology, and my degree allows me to combine all three!

What is one thing about university or engineering that you wished you knew earlier?

Engineering is such a broad degree, even within specialisations, so it’s good to try as many different courses as possible in first year so you can get an understanding of all the different possibilities.

What made you pick engineering at the University of Queensland over other universities?

UQ has a really great culture, and everyone is super supportive of each other within engineering, across all year levels and specialisations!

Give us your best tip for first-year engineering students?

There are so many opportunities and ways to get involved in university and engineering outside of classes or even just solely engineering clubs and societies. Get involved around campus as much as you can – you will meet some amazing people both in and outside of your degree!

What's your favourite example of amazing engineering?

Carbon nanofiber and gold nanoparticle tissue engineering scaffolds!

Tell us your dream engineering job when you graduate?

I would love a role in either chemical or biomedical engineering research and development or in the energy sector!

What do you hope to achieve as a WE student leader?

Inspire the next generation of young female engineers and encourage and mentor them throughout their engineering journeys!
