The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) – UQ Student Chapter would like to invite you to our first meeting of 2019, to be held on Friday 8th of February.

During the lecture “Improving Fire and Life Safety in a Vertical World”, Justin Francis will take us through his findings on high rise buildings fire safety and evacuation in recent years. Francis has gathered over 23 years of experience as a firefighter which he has managed to combine with formal tertiary education, and we are glad to have him sharing his knowledge. Please learn more about him and the topic of his presentation in the flyer attached. We hope to see you there.

The presentation will use the information collated during a Churchill  Fellowship in 2017 on High-rise Fire Safety and Evacuation (International Perspective 11 Countries)1. The specific topics of the seminar include:

  • Evolving Evacuation Methods from High‐rise Buildings
  • A Proactive Approach to improving Fire and Life Safety
  • Occupant Evacuation Lifts
  • High‐rise firefighting techniques
  • Case Studies (depending on time availability)

Speaker bio
Mr. Francis has 23 years’ experience as a firefighter in Australia, coupled with formal tertiary qualifications in Emergency Management from Charles Sturt University and has attended and assisted to manage a large range of emergency situations across Australia including major Cyclones, significant flood events, wildfire campaigns and a huge variety of Fire/Chemical/Rescue type incidents.

He has participated in the co‐development of a high rise training course aimed at bridging the gap between firefighters and the complexities of building fire safety systems. Recently he was awarded a Churchill Fellowship which involved extensive research and travel in 2017 focusing on the subject of Evacuation from Tall Buildings and large structures.
