Faculty of
Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology

Students bring fresh ideas, up to date knowledge and enthusiasm to your organisation whilst offering you the opportunity to promote your organisation as an employer of choice and build your pipeline of future talent.

Engaging a student in the form of offering a professional practice opportunity, internship or work integrated learning placement will not only provide the student with invaluable hands on experience, but can provide extra resources for project work or additional skills and knowledge to compliment the skills of your current staff.

Engage with our students

You can engage our students in the following ways:

Professional Practice

Professional practice is an integral learning activity within our undergraduate program. To ensure our graduates are work ready, undergraduate engineering students are required to complete at least 450 hours of professional practice in order to be eligible to graduate. At least 225 hours of this professional practice must be assisting, or under the immediate direction of a professional engineer and can be fulfilled by undertaking vacation work or part-time employment during the university semester.

Work Integrated Learning Placements

In 2012, the faculty introduced a 5 year integrated Bachelor (honours) and Master of Engineering (BE/ME) program. The program provides UQ students with greater specialisation opportunities and produces graduates who are agile and globally competitive. The defining activity in the BE (Hons)/ME program is a full time placement of 24 weeks within industry or a research institution. View the industry brochure here.

Students undertaking unpaid engineering professional practice to satisfy the Bachelor of Engineering requirements are covered by the University's insurance policy, provided they have completed and submitted the student registration form and obtained approval from the Executive Dean at least two days before commencement of the work experience.

If you employ and pay students for the work undertaken, they should be covered by your organisations insurance.

If you would like to engage our students in professional practice, internships, vacation work or work integrated learning opportunities please contact the Student Employability Team on +61 7 3365 8534 or industryplacements@eait.uq.edu.au.
