Faculty of
Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology

We have put together some steps below to help you get started on your UQ engineering journey.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with the First Year Engineering Team (Yr1eng@uq.edu.au or +61 7 3346 7881).

1. Log into mySI-net

You will need to use your username (e.g. s4123456) and password. Read and complete any tasks listed on the first page.

Go to mySI-net »

2. Update your details

Go to the Manage Details section on mySI-net. Make sure you fill in your mobile number and second email address (so we can contact you if you lose something, win a scholarship, etc.), when you expect to graduate, HECS-Help form, etc.

3. Work through the First Year Engineering Program Guide

The program guide outlines everything you need to know and do to start your engineering journey at UQ. It includes a checklist to help you complete each step, including preparing for uni, how to sign-on to classes, and where to go for help.

Make sure you put all important dates into your calendar, such as O-week (including project day), sign-on and exam weeks.

4. Complete the Get Set Quiz

The GetSet quiz helps refresh your knowledge and understand what your lecturers think you know.  We then use the data from all first year students to determine the overall cohort's knowledge and pass this on to your lecturers so they can tailor lectures to suit your needs.

So, make sure to grab a pen and paper and just do your best. But remember, be honest! If you can't remember the answer to a question, chose that option. Answering everything honestly will help us help you.

5. Check out what courses you can take during your studies

Use the BE (Hons) course list to see what courses you can study. Make sure you read the electives guidelines to see which you can study.

We recommend you put together a study plan, and meet with one of our academic advisors to check it is feasible.

Watch the video below to learn how to plan your courses better with using UQ Timetable Planner.

6. Sign-on to your classes

Now that you have decided what courses you will take this semester, sign on for your lectures, tutorials and pracs (details on how to sign-on and which dates each course opens are included in the First Year Engineering Program Guide).

You'll need to pick a project for ENGG1100 or ENGG1200 (depending on what semester you're starting) to determine some class times. Go to the project pages for more information:

ENGG1100 (semester 1) »  ENGG1200 (semester 2) »

7. Get a head start and complete the Academic Integrity Tutorial

The Academic Integrity Tutorial is compulsory for students studying ENGG1100 this year. Refer to Page 5 of the First Year Program Guide for more information.
