The First Year Engineering Learning Centre (FYELC, 50-C201) is situated in Hawken Engineering Building and is a multi-purpose space created to enhance the experience of first year engineering students.

Working in a team is an important skill for engineering students, as the engineering profession is collaborative and interdisciplinary.  As such, this collaborative learning space has a relaxed, contemporary design and is fitted with the latest in IT and media facilities to facilitate student interaction, learning and teamwork. The centre promotes the establishment of student networks and helps to smooth the transition from high school to university.

The FYELC is succeeding in providing opportunities for building social networks with the aim of academic enhancement and provides a place to call “home” while on campus.

The centre is staffed by the Manager (Ms Lisa Deacon), First Year Academic Advisor (Emeritus Professor Caroline Crosthwaite) and Administrative Officer (Miss Sheryl Owens). 10 FYELC tutors are available each day from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm covering multiple engineering disciplines, with two Mentors available at the beginning of Semester 1 and Semester 2, passing on his or her knowledge and help you adjust to university life.
